Herb Feith was one of the founding fathers of Indonesian studies in Australia. He was also one of the forces behind the founding of The Australian Volunteers International. He was one of the first Australians to work as a civil servant in the young Republic of Indonesia on a local salary. He joined Monash University in 1962, where he developed a study of modern Indonesia and helped with the founding of the Centre of Southeast Asian Studies.

As a great humanitarian, Feith led generations of students to share his passionate concern for Indonesia, human rights, peace studies and conflict resolution.

In 2017 Monash University established the Herb Feith Indonesian Engagement Centre. The Centre works to expand and deepen Monash University’s relationships with its Indonesian partners in universities, government, non-government organisations, cultural and media networks, industry and alumni.
